The Bridges We Build

社会人际 1,236 词 190 生词 15 题

I live in a small town in the northeast of the country. As a citizen, I care deeply about my community, and I believe that good relations between neighbours really matter. I trust my neighbours, and I always try to be a trustworthy person myself. A lot of our happiness comes from these simple ties.

In our society, interpersonal skills are basically the key to a happy life. Good etiquette shows respect for others. An ethical person follows clear ethics and treats everyone as an equal. When we support equality, we build a fair world. An immoral act, such as name-calling, can easily break a friendship. Sadly, inequality still exists, and discrimination — including racism and sexism — causes conflict in many places. This is a serious societal problem, and distrustful people often feel lonely.

At work we practise teamwork every day. We collaborate on shared tasks, and this collaboration makes us stronger. A collaborative team is always a cooperative one: its members cooperate openly, and this cooperation builds real trust. We also compete in a healthy way, because competition can push us to improve. However, too much competitiveness can hurt feelings, so each competitor should stay respectful.

Last week our office formed a partnership with a local company. Many stakeholders attended the consultation to discuss the plan. During the meeting we split into small breakout groups. The manager shared a confidential report and asked for our approval before any new step could begin. In the end everyone endorsed the idea and authorized the project. The bulk of the work will now begin.

At the award ceremony, the applause was warm and loud. Our success did not arise by luck alone; we attribute it to months of honest work. The atmosphere in the hall was full of joy, and everyone felt immense pride.

A good friend of mine just received her citizenship. She went to the embassy many times to fix her papers. She often says that society should care for every member. Some neighbours openly discuss socialism and socialist ideas, and one elderly man proudly calls himself a communist. The whole population of our town values the rapport and the close link between families.

On Saturday I was awake early in my bedroom. I made pancakes with one egg and a banana, and I added a little pepper. I poured some granola into a bowl and put the bowl onto the table. Then I sat on the sofa to eat. A bell rang at the door. It was a friend carrying a box of gifts. She also brought a brochure about the new community center and an old photograph of our street.

In winter the indoor air is cold, and water can freeze overnight. I light a fire in the fireplace and turn on the gas heater. One day a man pushed a cart along the icy road. He wore thick rubber boots, and the sleeve of his coat was torn. I offered to mend it for him. He wore his watch on his left wrist.

My grandfather loved to tell a fable. His birthplace was a tiny village near the forest. In the story, a hunter once met a deer in the vast woods. He could have killed it, but he chose not to. The deer lowered its head, as if to thank him. The moral of the story is simple: never betray the weak, for trust once broken is hard to rebuild.

I also enjoy a good detective story. In one novel, a spy used a clever disguise and almost tricked everyone. He hid a gun under his coat, but luckily he never had to shoot it. A brave lass helped the detective solve the case, and the ending was totally unbelievable.

In another story, a prisoner escaped and hid on a liner that crossed the sea. The ship sailed to a southern land where a wise queen ruled. The mountain roads there were steep, and green fields stretched to the horizon.

One of my neighbours survived cancer, and the relief was felt by the whole street. We should curb excessive habits that harm our health. His doctor told him to chew his food slowly, to drink water when he felt thirst, and to exercise every day.

Last summer floodwater rose near our town, and the news was disturbing. It was an intense and frightening time. The evacuation was quick, and everyone acted responsibly. Volunteers came to assist the older families — a dozen people arrived within an hour. Some old houses were insecure and had to be repaired.

Our community school has a simple motto: 'Learn together, grow together.' The children recite it every morning, and they also sing a little rhyme. Teachers hone their skills through experiential learning, and this supports the maturation of young minds. In class, students practise computation and study congruent shapes. A left-handed girl showed us a similar trick. A guest teacher gave an introduction to coding and gave a demo of a small robot.

The town hall ran a survey about public services. Many citizens made a suggestion for improvement, and they wrote a note regarding the roads. We must tackle the problem of traffic jams in the center. A report showed that the main characteristic of our town is kindness. The new model of the community center adds an extra dimension of comfort. Conversely, some people still prefer the old, simple design.

Shopping locally is preferable. Long, time-consuming trips to the big city are tiring, and I would rather stay close to home, preferably right here in town. There is plenty of choice at the wholesale market. A tempting promotional offer tried to make me buy more than I needed, but I kept a ration of my money for the week. A postal package I was waiting for was overdue and did not arrive until Tuesday. That delay was a small backward step, but nothing serious.

In the science room, children learn to vocalize new words clearly. They measure a line to the nearest inch and millimetre. A full-sized model of a cell stands on the desk. They collect samples, circle the right answers, and study how a clone grows. The room was dusty, and ash from the old stove drifted down like soft snow. A beam of sunlight fell through the window, and the children dreamed of cosmic wonders.

It is crazy to envy others, because every life has hidden struggles. I feel immensely lucky, and my friends are truly fabulous. One small favor or a handy tip can brighten a whole day. A kind gift is never unimportant. True wealth is not money; it is the people who stand by you. When a friendship goes cold, it is like a dead fire — but a warm word can light it again. We should keep our good deeds separate from any wish for reward.

Finally, I believe we ought to be forward-looking. We should engage with our neighbours and associate with people from all backgrounds. To maintain peace, we must accept that a clash of opinions is normal. We must also accept that disagreements can be acceptable if they are handled kindly. We should never blindly follow others, and we ought never to forbid honest questions. A problem may occur at any time, so we should pass our experience on to the young. For a second, think of this: good manners shown publicly turn strangers into friends.
